I don't know much about the Phantom, though I know he goes back at least to the 50's, and he's considered a classic - more so overseas in Australia and Europe than the US.

Have the early Phantom strips even been collected? Would/Could/Should the Phantom receive the same treatment as the Spirit?

He goes back to the '30s.
And of course, there have also been Phantom comic books, some of which featured (often very good) original material, and some of which reprinted the newspaper strips.

There have been a fair number of reprint volumes--check Tony Raiola's website. http://www.pacificcomicsclub.com

I don't think, however, that any Phantom comic books have ever been reprinted.

The early Phantom strips, from the character's inception in 1936, have been reprinted and are still being reprinted (and restored) to this day.

That's the wrong URL, it should be: http://www.pacificcomics.com/
You can also get a few volumes of reprints from Ken Pierce Books: http://www.kenpiercebooks.com/phantom1.htm

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the link. Looks like much of the series has been reprinted at various times. It does look like a good candidate for the archives process. It would probably be a better seller than some of the titles.

Because THE PHANTOM was a newspaper strip, I'd hope any reprints of his adventures would NOT be in "Archive" form-- but in a horizontal format like that used for the SUPERMAN and BATMAN newspaper strips, or all the ones Kitchen Sink was putting out, like LI'L ABNER (oh, how I wished I'd had the money, time & storage space to get more of those when they were coming out).
